The Story

Majical Cloudz — Devon Welsh and Matt Otto — made music that was raw, minimal, and emotionally devastating. Are You Alone? was their final album, and it's a record that strips everything back to voice, synth, and feeling. Matador Records released it. SPIN named it Album of the Week. It earned a Juno nomination.

My contribution was additional mixing — working within an aesthetic that demanded absolute restraint. Every decision mattered more because there was nowhere to hide. When there are only three elements in a mix, the space between them is the fourth element. That philosophy — that silence and negative space are as important as sound — carries through everything I do.

Devon and Matt were part of Montreal's art-music ecosystem in the 2010s, alongside artists like Sean Nicholas Savage and Grimes. Working in that world taught me to trust instinct over technique, and to prioritize emotional truth over technical perfection.
