The Story
Paradaïz was our first project with Matea Radic, who has fast become one of our dearest friends and collaborators. Her essence is embedded in every frame of this film, at once hilarious and sincere.
A 2 year sound journey for an 9 minute film. The music was composed in Montreal at The Bungalow studio and features collaborations with Edmir Polovina, son of the late great Bosnian folk hero Himzo Polovina.
For the sound design, to get a sense of place, we spent a week roaming the streets of Sarajevo in a 45°C heatwave, following crows and recording the ambiences that would become the film's world. The trip taught us about where the story had its roots, and immersed us in the smells, sounds, and sights of the city. It was a glimpse into the resilience of the Bosnian people, and a joie de vivre that persists despite everything they've faced.
The challenge in the sound was balance. The film carries the weight of a childhood interrupted by one of the longest sieges in modern history, but it lives in the humor of everyday beautifully whimsical things. Our job was to keep the story human, playful and sincere.
We can't wait for the next one with Matea.
