The Story
moonGARDEN was the centrepiece of Nuit Blanche Winnipeg 2024, giant inflatable spheres by Lucion Media installed in Old Market Square, each one housing Anna Binta Diallo's "Spectra," a kaleidoscope of projected silhouettes depicting humans, animals, celestial bodies, and natural elements inspired by myths, lunar phases, and eclipses.
The soundscape was co-created to fill the square and bleed through the membrane of the spheres, built from field recordings of children playing, powerful waves and blowing grass from the shores of Lake of the Woods, and vocal samples of poetry drawn from Anna's mythological writing on the power of the moon.
The sound had to work at two scales simultaneously: the intimate experience of pressing your face against a glowing sphere and seeing shadow-puppet figures dance inside, and the broader wash of sound that drew people across the square toward the light.
The red spheres with projected shadow figures of trees and people, that image captures exactly what this collaboration felt like. Sound and light and myth, all blurring together in a public space where strangers stand shoulder to shoulder and share moments together.
